Combined Nomenclature (CN)
The Combined Nomenclature (CN) is the EU's goods nomenclature, extending the six-digit HS code to eight digits. It is the basis for the Common Customs Tariff and EU trade statistics. TariffPilot always works on the current CN.
Also known as: CN, CN code, KN, Combined Nomenclature
How many digits does the Combined Nomenclature have?
The CN has eight digits. The first six digits match the international HS code; the seventh and eighth digits are the EU-specific subdivision (CN subheading).
How often is the CN updated?
The Combined Nomenclature is updated annually and published in the Official Journal of the European Union. Each new version applies from 1 January of the following year. Changes can move, merge, or create commodity codes.
What is the CN used for?
- the basis of the EU Common Customs Tariff
- the basis of EU external trade statistics
- the starting point for the eleven-digit import code number via TARIC
The Combined Nomenclature at TariffPilot
TariffPilot always works on the current CN. Through the tariff code revision, the platform checks after the annual update whether previously determined customs tariff numbers are still valid.
